My name is Jarie Smeding. I am a creative cultural anthropologist based in Leiden, the Netherlands. Alongside studying for my bachelors in Cultural Anthropology and masters in Sociology over the past few years, I have spent much of my free time developing my artistic skills in illustrating art and photography.
From both my academic background and my personal life, I have a strong interest in politics, activism and media. Over the last few years I have captured several protests and explored ethnographic filmmaking during my bachelor. In 2021 I made a short doc about non-binary identity and makeup [link].
In this In my visual art practice I like to combine both physical and digital art. I would describe my art style as a blend of cartoon and graphic design. Sometime I like to create a digital sketches and animations on my tablet. For physical pieces I use lots of different media, and I like to explore with colour, media, shapes and paper cutting. I tend to work with bright colours and often explore themes related to gender, sexuality, and nature.
